To Lullabies

I know now, my life understood
as a barless music of pressures,

that reflection is composition:
my twin daughters

when they were born
felt light as sprains in both arms.

And now:

memorandums spilling onto the floor
it’s mother goose coming down the stairs,

cards made for a game I have forgotten
why or for whom I am playing

the rain shakes the sky with its falling lines
like our endless requests, maman.

What parsley in a washed jam jar
is foolish enough to lean out like a crowd

waving their parsley green handkerchiefs
to an invisible spectacle passing by…

this spectacle, surprisingly,
is not a celebration –

Say:

take these hands,
take these hands, the hands of a mother,
take my strength away from me,

take me on credit,
take me with you –

like greenness; sense
only comes after
these hands are given over –

Adesso so, se avverto la mia vita
come musica continua di pressioni,

che riflettere è comporre:

è mamma oca che scende dalle scale,

Quale erbetta è così stolta da sbucare
a mo’ di folla da un vasetto terso di conserva

sventolando verdi fazzoletti
mentre passa uno spettacolo invisibile…

con stupore, lo spettacolo
non è una cerimonia –

prendete queste mani,
prendete queste mani, le mani di una madre,
prendete la mia forza e portatela via,

prendetemi a credito,
prendetemi con voi –

come il verde; il senso
si risveglia solo quando
queste mani si concedono –

Biografia
Lucy Mercer ha pubblicato Emblem, la sua prima raccolta di poesie, nel 2022 con la casa editrice Prototype. L’opera è stata selezionata come lettura consigliata dalla Poetry Book Society. Mercer si è aggiudicata il premio inaugurale per la poesia della rivista White Review; sue poesie e saggi sono apparsi su Granta, Art Review, The White Review, Poetry London, Poetry Review e in altre pubblicazioni. Insieme a Livia Franchini, è co-editrice del podcast-rivista Too Little / Too Hard: Writers on the Intersections of Work, Time and Value, un’iniziativa finanziata dalla Royal Society of Literature. È ricercatrice post-dottorato presso l’Università di Exeter.
