Audre Lorde (USA 1936 - 1992)

Poet, writer, feminist, and librarian. Her poetry and literature is considered as a way to make the world bearable. Her readers get to engage and transform the dark into light and take action on matters that will have an impact in society. She dedicated her life and talent raising awareness regarding racism, sexism and the like: “a land where all lovers are mute.”

Her work expresses anger, discomfort. Lorde presents her poetry as a connection between the human essence, the biological existence and one’s soul. Her poetic work has been highly influential in the civil rights, anti-war and feminist movements. Her verses contribute to think about subjectivity and identity. Her texts speak about words, acts, desires, gestures, from an outside view yet still self-exposing her transcendent and spectacular vision.

Audre is passionate about ideas; she questions beliefs, behaviors, theories and thoughts: “death lay a condemnation / within my blood.” The magic of her poetry resides on the motivation of bringing people together to accomplish things and that is what her poetic work demands to her readers.

She asks “What are you willing to do now?”

Who Said It Was Simple by Audre Lorde

There are so many roots to the tree of anger
that sometimes the branches shatter
before they bear.
Sitting in Nedicks
the women rally before they march
discussing the problematic girls
they hire to make them free.
An almost white counterman passes
a waiting brother to serve them first
and the ladies neither notice nor reject
the slighter pleasures of their slavery.
But I who am bound by my mirror
as well as my bed
see causes in color
as well as sex

and sit here wondering
which me will survive
all these liberations.

Conversations in Crisis

I speak to you as a friend speaks
or a true lover
not out of friendship nor love
but for a clear meeting
of self upon self
in sight of our hearth
but without fire.

I cherish your words that ring
like late summer thunders
to sing without octave
and fade, having spoken the season.
But I hear the false heat of this voice
as it dries up the sides of your words
coaxing melodies from your tongue
and this curled music is treason.

Must I die in your fever –
or, as the flames wax, take cover
in your heart’s culverts
crouched like a stranger
under the scorched leaves of your other burnt loves
until the storm passes over?

Poetessa, scrittrice, femminista e bibliotecaria.

I suoi versi contribuiscono a pensare alla soggettività e all’identità.

Chiede “Cosa sei disposto a fare adesso?”

Seduta a Nedicks
le donne si radunano prima di marciare
discutendo sulle ragazze problematiche

tutte queste liberazioni.

Conversazioni in crisi

Ti parlo come parla un amico
o un vero amante
non per amicizia né per amore
ma per un incontro chiaro
di sé su di sé
in vista del nostro focolare
ma senza fuoco.

Adoro le tue parole che suonano
come tuoni di fine estate
cantare senza l’ottava
