They will fit, she thinks,
but only if her backbone
cuts exactly into his rib cage,
and only if his knees
dock exactly under her knees
and all four
agree on a common angle.

All would be well
if only
they could face each other.

Even as it is
there are compensations
for having to meet
nose to neck
chest to scapula
groin to rump
when they sleep.

They look, at least,
as if they were going
in the same direction.

Funzionerà, lo sente,
ma solo se la spina dorsale di lei
combacia esattamente col torace di lui
e solo se le ginocchia di lui
approdano proprio sotto le sue
e tutt’e quattro
appartengono allo stesso angolo.

Tutto andrebbe bene
se solo
potessero guardarsi in viso.

Anche com’è adesso
c’è una ricompensa
nel dover far collimare
il naso con il collo
il busto con la scapola
l’inguine con il sedere
mentre stanno dormendo.

Hanno l’aria, almeno,
di stare andando
in una stessa direzione.
